AXA Schengen Visa Insurance is a travel insurance product, which covers travel to all 27 of the countries in the Schengen Area, while AXA’s upgraded travel insurance offerings can be used to expand this coverage to include a number of additional European countries, such as the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, and Romania.
The Schengen travel insurance from AXA is divided into three separate products: Low Cost insurance, Europe Travel insurance, and Multi Trip insurance. All three products are suitable for individual tourists, families, business travellers and tourist groups, and up to 10 people can be insured from a single payment.
Highlights of the Policy
- Medical expenses covered up to €30,000
- Repatriation
- 24-hour assistance

- Meets requirements from the E.U
Countries Covered By AXA Schengen Visa Insurance
Travellers who are applying for a visa for the Schengen Area are required to have valid travel and medical insurance. It should be noted that the Schengen Area does also provide visa-free access for short-term trips to passport holders from many countries around the world, including the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. Nevertheless, it is recommended that all visitors to the Schengen Area obtain accredited travel insurance to cover any medical expenses.
AXA’s Low Cost insurance product covers travel to the 27 Schengen Area countries, which are:
- Austria
- Belgium
- Croatia
- Czech Republic
- Denmark (excluding Greenland and the Faroe Islands)
- Estonia
- Finland
- France (excluding overseas departments and regions)
- Germany
- Greece
- Hungary
- Iceland
- Italy
- Latvia
- Liechtenstein
- Lithuania
- Luxembourg
- Malta
- Netherlands (excluding overseas constituent countries)
- Norway
- Poland
- Portugal
- Slovakia
- Slovenia
- Spain
- Sweden
- Switzerland
In addition to the 27 recognised Schengen Area countries, AXA’s Multi Trip insurance and Europe Travel insurance also covers a number of non-Schengen countries. Specifically, this extends coverage to the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Ireland and Romania. This means that these two more expensive AXA Schengen Visa Insurance products cover travel within the Schengen Area, the European Union, and the United Kingdom.
There are three micro states, which are regarded as de facto members of the Schengen Area. These are Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican City. All three of these micro states are covered by AXA’s travel insurance. However, the insurance does not provide coverage for the country a traveller is permanently resident in.
Applying for Europ Assistance Schengen Travel Insurance
Applications for AXA Schengen Visa Insurance can be completed online. It will provide the mandatory travel insurance certificate needed for a Schengen Area visa application and this certificate will be sent via email immediately upon approval. The travel insurance and certificate are entirely in-keeping with EU requirements and guidelines.
The travel insurance is suitable for individual tourists, business travellers, groups of tourists, and families. AXA’s offering also allows travellers to buy insurance for up to 10 people with a single payment.
Important Coronavirus Information
In contrast to some Schengen Area travel insurance products, AXA’s Schengen Visa Insurance provides cover for medical expenses related to coronavirus (COVID-19). This includes costs related to hospital treatment, examinations, testing and medicine, as long as these are medically necessary and ordered by a qualified medical professional.
However, it is important to understand that the insurance policy will not cover travellers who travel against the advice of the government of the country they are visiting, the country they are resident in, the World Health Organization, the European Union, or any other relevant government, agency, or health body.
Other Important Insurance Information
Travellers are advised to visit a local General Practitioner (GP) for minor illnesses and injuries and follow their advice. Hospitals should be visited for severe pain, illness, or accidents. It is important to contact AXA as soon as possible, so that the insurance claim can be understood and processed swiftly.
Travel insurance for the Schengen Area with AXA can be cancelled in the event that a visa application is unsuccessful. The request for cancellation should be made in writing and AXA will require evidence of the visa refusal. Once this evidence has been provided, a full refund for the travel insurance will be issued.
The upper limit for medical expenses with the Low Cost insurance product is 30,000€, while the Multi Trip and Europe Travel products both have an upper limit of 100,000€. All three products meet the requirements of the European Union and are recognised around the world, making them fully compatible with Schengen visa applications.
AXA’s Multi Trip insurance is an annual insurance product. This covers travellers for multiple trips during a one year period, but each of these trips can last for a maximum of 90 days. At the end of the 90 day period, travellers will need to leave the Schengen Area. Insurance will then continue once they re-enter for their next trip.
Unlike some Schengen Area insurance products, AXA’s offering does not have any age limits.
