These countries have all agreed to remove passport and border controls at their mutual borders, which ensures travellers and residents are free to move between these countries without a passport.

In addition to the countries listed, there are also three micro states that are de facto members of the Schengen Area: Monaco, the Vatican City and San Marino. Travel to these regions is also covered by MAWISTA Schengen Visa Insurance. However, unlike some Schengen travel insurance products, travel to the non-Schengen countries of the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania is not covered by the insurance.

Insurance coverage is not available for the country in which a traveller permanently resides. Likewise, if any country within the Schengen Area becomes subject to a travel warning issued by Germany’s Foreign Office, travel to that country and any medical expenses will no longer be covered by the insurance.

Applying for MAWISTA Schengen Visa Insurance

MAWISTA Schengen Visa Insurance can be acquired online via the company’s website. A certificate is emailed immediately upon taking out the policy and this will be in a printable PDF format. The insurance policy is recognised around the world and is fully compatible with visa applications for the Schengen Area.

Valid travel insurance is mandatory for visa applicants who visit the Schengen Area. MAWISTA Schengen Visa Insurance covers travellers who require multiple entries to the Schengen Area during this insurance period. The insurance policy duration can be anywhere between 8 and 183 days in total.

Important Coronavirus Information

With regards to coronavirus (COVID-19), travellers to the Schengen Area are required to follow any guidelines that may be provided by local governments in the individual countries, as well as guidelines from the European Union, the World Health Organization, and other relevant official bodies.

Unlike some Schengen travel insurance products on the market, MAWISTA Schengen Visa Insurance provides coverage for instances where travellers become ill with COVID-19 during their trip. This includes coverage for any medically necessary treatments, as well as for examinations, medicine and any costs associated with PCR testing and in-patient quarantine, as long as these treatments or services have been ordered by a qualified and registered doctor.

Other Important Insurance Information

Reimbursements for insured medical costs are unlimited. However, it is important to understand that there are several medical costs that are not covered by the insurance product. These include:

  • Costs related to pre-existing conditions
  • Cosmetic dentist treatments, or temporary treatments where the cost exceeds 250€
  • Deliveries that occur after week 36 of a pregnancy
  • Pregnancy terminations that could be safely postponed
  • Treatments that are the consequence of substance abuse or addiction
  • Massage treatments or similar therapies
  • Medical expenses that exceed what is regarded as reasonable for Schengen Area countries

The agreed period of insurance will begin upon first entry into a country within the Schengen Area and this can occur at any time within 12 months of the insurance being approved and the certificate being received.

Claims can be filed via an online claims form, which will be read over and either approved or rejected. General guidance is to visit a General Practitioner (GP) in the local area for minor illnesses, or minor accidents. Severe illness or pain can be treated at a hospital, or by an on-call doctor offering emergency treatment services. Travellers should visit a dentist for toothache, or other relevant dental problems.

Travellers who require in-patient treatment at a hospital should contact the insurance provider as soon as possible. Swift contact with the insurance provider can result in hospital bills being covered and paid directly to the hospital, before the costs are incurred by the person receiving hospital care.

An emergency call centre team will be available 24-hours a day, seven days a week. Travellers are able to call on: +49 89 6242 4496.

Any MAWISTA Schengen Visa Insurance policy is able to be cancelled if a visa is refused for entry to the Schengen Area. Cancellations need to be put in writing and refunds will be issued once the 12-month validity period is up.

The upper age limit for a MAWISTA Schengen Visa Insurance policy is 80 years.
